DC killed off Batman’s original recurring villain after 8 decades

Batman’s villains pop up here or there and attack Gotham City again and again. Batman is against killing, like most of the heroes, especially DC ones. In the current Batman run, none of the bat-rogues seem to be decommissioned, and it seems Hugo Strange had reached the end of his run-in recent Batman #10.

Lately, we have Hugo Strange declaring war on Tozuki-San’s Tozuki Petrochemicals, which served as Torus’ supplier of chemical and technical goods. And this just went south, and Hugo was brutally gunned down by the Minotaur’s covert syndicate, Torus.

Like many other notable villains, Hugo was one of the Dark Knight’s oldest recurring foes. Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane and was an expert in chemistry, biology, and psychiatry. Made his debut in Detective Comics #36 (Dec, 1939).

Earlier, too, Hugo’s death had occurred, but it was revealed to be fake. But that was then, and this is now, and this time it seems there’s no coming back from it.

In Fox’s Gotham, BD Wong played Hugo Strange.

But, as aforementioned, for every decommissioned goon, many new ones had surfaced. And now, as if Batsy didn’t have his rogue’s gallery full, Gotham will soon get its version of Sinister Six. And Ryan Sook’s variant cover for Batman #12 teases the villains as giant chess pieces surrounding Batman.
