A broken heart leads to a never-ending sadness

Marjane Satrapi, the Iranian-French author, illustrator, and filmmaker best known for her autobiographical graphic novel Persepolis, has died in Paris at the age of 56, the Élysée Palace confirmed the news on Thursday.

Marjane gained worldwide recognition with Persepolis, a stark monochrome memoir that chronicles her childhood and coming-of-age during Iran’s Islamic Revolution, introducing many Western readers to the harsh reality behind news headlines.

Her family and close circle said Marjane “died of sadness,” adding that she never recovered after the death of her husband, Swedish film producer Mattias Ripa, on April 8, 2025.

French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute and expressed his condolences, calling her “a great artist who transformed an Iranian childhood into a universal fable.” The palace also added: “With her childlike perspective, her irony, her tenderness, and her inner demons, the author created a deeply moving world with which readers identified.”

Yaël Braun-Pivet, president of the French National Assembly, noted in her X, “Marjane Satrapi had turned her work into an act of freedom. With Persepolis, she had given a face and a voice to the Iranian revolution, proudly carrying the fight for women’s freedom and dignity.”

In 2007, Persepolis was adapted into an award‑winning animated film co‑directed by Satrapi; the cast included Chiara Mastroianni as the voice of young Marjane and Catherine Deneuve as her mother.

In a 2024 interview, Marjane told The Guardian that she hoped Persepolis would prompt Western readers to recognize the shared humanity of Iranian people and realize: “Oh, they’re actually human beings like us”.

Her most recent film, Dear Paris (2024), was a dark comedy in which characters confront mortality.

Marjane’s work, marked by irony, tenderness, and moral courage, leaves a lasting legacy in comics, cinema, and global conversations about freedom.
