A Prequel novel surfaces for new young readers
With 76 days left for the DCU movie, Superman, left; the official synopsis for a Superman prequel junior novel titled Superman: Welcome to Metropolis has surfaced online.
The tie-in novel set has specific, canon-violating language to Kal-el, the last son of Krypton.
The junior novel is aimed at new young readers and fans, telling of Clark’s arrival in Metropolis.
Releasing on June 3, it consists of 144 pages. The full synopsis:
Take to the skies with Superman in this original prequel novel based on the new film, in theaters July 11, 2025!
Clark Kent is a fresh face to Metropolis, trying to balance his new job at The Daily Planet and his secret identity as Superman, a powerful metahuman, while uncovering a dangerous mystery that seems to tie back to the infamous Lex Luthor. Discover how the world’s first superhero found his place in his new home in this original prequel novel based on the film. ‘Superman: Welcome to Metropolis’ features an eight-page full-color insert with character profiles!
Avoiding the classic origin story, this novel is a perfecto intro for James Gunn’s take, providing an out-of-the-line origin for Superman played by David Corenswet.
But one word rings the alarm bells: Metahuman.
As per, the DC Standard, a human with powers is considered a Metahuman, and Clark isn’t a human. So, identifying him as a metahuman is an unexpected steering from decades-old canonized DC.
Unlike Barry Allen or Wally West, who were humans before they received powers, Superman is an alien from destroyed Krypton, with the Solar System’s yellow sun performing as a catalyst that channels his Kryptonian physiology to unexpected heights.
So, mentioning David Corenswet’s Superman as a metahuman is something different. But looking at the possibility, for some time, until it is revealed that the Man of Steel hails from an alien planet, everyone thinks he’s a human with superpowers.
Superman soars to theaters on July 11, 2025.

This novel sounds like a fresh take on Superman’s origin, but calling him a “metahuman” feels a bit off. Isn’t he technically an alien with unique biology? I’m curious how James Gunn will handle this new angle—will it redefine how we see Superman? The idea of skipping the classic origin story seems bold, but will it resonate with long-time fans? Also, how does David Corenswet’s portrayal differ from previous actors? I can’t wait to see how this plays out, but what do you think about the term “metahuman” being used for Superman? Could this be a misstep, or does it open up new storytelling possibilities?
Yeah, it’s a bold step, but then again we know the angle of him being considered a metahuman when he’s not even a human, in first place. Let’s see how the movie removes the ‘human’ from ‘metahuman’ in labelling Supes. This should be something enticing.
