Turles, Goku’s evil self’s bamboozling fact revealed!

Akira Toriyama, the creator of the Dragon Ball Z, had once revealed that The Tree of Might could be Goku’s dream. This has left many fans perplexed.

Now, The Tree of Might was entertaining indeed, but it wasn’t up to the Dragon Ball Z mark. It’s the 3rd movie in the DBZ franchise. It was the first appearance of Turles, who looks very much like Goku. On July 7, 1990, Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might was initially released in Japan between episodes 54 & 55 at the Toei Anime Fair, 1990.

A Saiyan named Turles arrives on Earth to plant a seed of the Tree of Might. This tree could destroy the planet and also make Turles powerful. Goku and the rest of the Z fighters decided to fight Turles and save the planet.

This film is quite forgettable, but the clash between the saiyans, Goku, and Turles is something that was the favorite takeaway for everyone. And as aforementioned, Turles looks just like Goku! Because of its feeble impact, its canonicity was in question. There was doubt about placing it in the timeline, and all, and the creator too didn’t make any remark until one fine day.

Toriyama hinted that the whole movie could just be Goku’s dream when he was on his way to Namek. So, who was Turles that Goku dreamed? As per Toriyama’s additional depth, Turles represented Goku if he had not hit his head.

This dream just meant that even when he was asleep, he was preparing for whatever he might battle on Namek, and he overcame the darker turn of himself and claimed his true self. Many people even thought Turles to be Raditz and Goku’s older brother. But the dream interpretation gave a whole new meaning to everyone’s not-so-favorite DBZ movie in the franchise.

Gou’s nature of not allowing anyone to surpass him could be the reason for the evil self, Turles. This technique must be Master Roshi’s advice to fuel Goku’s will when he trained him in Dragon Ball.

Anyhow, this story blends well with the Dragon Ball canon providing the fans with the Goku’s thought process and giving depth to Goku’s hero journey.

Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might, is available on Crunchyroll.
