After years and months of wait, HBO boss assures that Amanda is still on the list

For quite some time, specifically since January 2023, fans have been hearing about Amanda Waller making an appearance in her own series, Waller, spinning out of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad (2021). Well, it now gets a promising update.

Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller, the ruthless agent and leader and founder of the Task Force X, also known as the Suicide Squad, brings together a team of rogues by blackmailing or threatening them to undertake dirty missions that the government or normal heroes abstain from. She is depicted as a heartless government agent who is not happy with the existence of super-powered beings (heroes and villains alike).

Viola’s Amanda Waller is one of the few characters carried over from the DCEU to James Gunn’s DCU. In a recent interview with Variety, HBO’s Chief, Casey Bloys, was bombarded with questions about Waller and its chances. Casey retorted, “Put it this way, I wouldn’t say it’s on the runway. But “Lanterns” is coming up this summer,” cleverly. Viola’s Waller is still a priority for DC Studios.

With the launch of the DCU’s Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters slate, James and his co-CEO Peter Safran said that they’ll not rushing in any film or script. In August 2025, although James confirmed that Waller is delayed, he is determined to get it on air. He had stated then, “We’re working on it but, you know, some things have moved really fastly, and some things not so fast, and that’s been a thing that hasn’t moved so fast. But I can’t wait to see Viola get her Waller outfits on, with her s—ty floral dresses, and do something special.”

Albeit the project might be delayed, it still has a solid creative team with Watchmen TV show scribe Christal Henry and Doom Patrol creator Jeremy Carver, and Viola Davis is the executive producer.

Amanda Waller in Creature Commandos proved that she was working more carefully than before, and this was expected to be reflected in her series. Currently, her involvement with Supergirl and Clayface hasn’t been officially revealed yet. Neither HBO’s Lanterns has any involvement, unless there’s a potential cameo in them.

In DC Comics, she played a pivotal role in Absolute Power events on Prime Earth. It played a significant part in unleashing the Absolute Universe.

If Waller undergoes development throughout this year, then there’re chances of seeing the show on DCU’s 2027 slate.
