Marvel settles the age-old debate of Spider-Man’s true love, once and for all
Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson, aka MJ, had Spider-Man, aka Peter Parker’s heart, though his relationship with both came to an end. They both meant a lot to him, but who actually had his heart? This is a debate that’s been around for a long time.
There’ve been a lot of love interests in Spidey’s life, but these two occupy the forefront of his mind. One was his girlfriend, whom he lost to a terrible accident, while the other is his wife, and he traded his life with MJ, with Mephisto, to save Aunt May’s life.
Warning! Proceed at your own risk! The Amazing Spider-Man #4 & Gwenpool #1 spoilers ahead!
Now, a new drug coerces him to relive his worst moments, including the love of his life. The Amazing Spider-Man #4 by Joe Kelly, Pepe Larraz, Marte Gracia, and Joe Caramagna, Spider-Man in a battle with Hobgoblin when the memories of the past intervene—the memory of Uncle Ben and Aunt May from his childhood. As Spidy hides, he hears Hobgoblin is off to kill his friend Brian for alerting the Justice Department about the drugged soda, and this triggers another memory.

Spidy thinks about all the people he lost and all. He hears words from Uncle Ben, Shay Marken, and piercing insults from Harry Osborn and Ben Reilly. But what hits Peter the most is a remark from Captain Stacy, reminding him that he lost the love of his life…twice! His hallucination changes to a vision of Gwen and Mary Jane looking down at him as he struggles.
This shows that it’s been a long time since he lost Gwen, but she always has a place in his heart. Even the book Spider-Man: Blue portrays Peter’s love for Gwen. Connecting the dots shows that Gwen Stacy has been Peter’s greatest love. And to make matters more enticing and perplexing at the same time, we have Gwenpool #1 (2025) bringing her back.

Yeah, after staying dead for 52 years, Gwen Stacy has returned in Marvel’s May title, Gwenpool #1. We all know, in comics, no one stays dead for long (except for Uncle Ben of Earth 616, or for now). She’s not the original Gwenpool, but hope she’s the original Gwen Stacy of Earth 616!? Is it really her, this time!?

There are stories in which Gwen Stacy is alive and kicking, but those are of alternate universes. But the return of 616’s Gwen Stacy (if it is her, for real) changes the game completely.
Gwen Stacy, played by Emma Stone, dies in the Andrew Garfield movie Amazing Spider-Man 2, very much like in 1973’s The Amazing Spider-Man #121. TBH, Emma played Gwen perfectly!
